October 24, 2009: From the CDC - The President of the United States has signed a National Emergency Declaration due to the evolving public health disaster associated with the H1N1 situation.  This declaration allows healthcare systems to quickly implement disaster plans if and when they become overwhelmed. In combination with the Public Health Emergency declared by Secretary of HHS, this declaration gives authority for HHS to waive certain regulatory requirements for healthcare facilities such as the ability to submit waivers to establish alternate care sites and modify patient triage protocols, patient transfer procedures, and other actions that occur when they fully implement disaster operations plans.
